Enable Peer-to-peer Networking - Windows 95/98/ME
-
From within Windows - click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
-
Double-click on the Network icon.

If your network adapter is not in the list:
-
Click on Add, then Adapter, then Add again.
-
Select your make and model of card.
-
Click on OK.
-
If the file and printer sharing service is not listed:
-
Click on the File and Printer Sharing button.
-
If the two choices are not both selected, click on each in turn to enable
them. (This does not automatically give everyone on your network access
to your printers and files, it only makes it so you can give that access
as you wish without having to come back to Control Panel Network first.)
-
Click on OK.
-
If Client for Microsoft Networks is not listed:
-
Click on Add, then Client, then Add again.
-
Select Microsoft, then Client for Microsoft Networks.
-
Click OK.
-
If the Primary Network Logon is Client for Microsoft Networks:
-
If you want a password box to come up every time you start your computer,
do nothing.
-
If you don't want the password box each time you start windows:
-
Click on the arrow button to the right of the Primary Network Logon field.
-
Select Windows Logon.
-
When you start Windows, leave the password field blank in the password
box. You will not see it again after that.
-
If you have already entered a password, and now have to remove it:
-
Go to Control Panel and double-click on Passwords.
-
Click on the Change Windows password button.
-
In the top field enter your existing password.
-
Leave the other two fields blank and click the OK button.
-
Choose the Tab called Identification.
-
The computer name should be unique on your network.
-
The workgroup name should be the same on all computers on your network.
-
If the NetBEUI protocol is not listed:
-
Click on Add, then Protocol, then Add again.
-
Select Microsoft, then NetBEUI.
-
Click on OK.
-
Click on the NetBEUI for your dialup adapter, then click on Remove. (This
is for security reasons.)
-
Click on NetBEUI for your network adapter, then click on Properties.
-
Click on the Advanced tab.
-
If Set this protocol to be the default protocol is not checked, click on
it so it is.
-
Click on OK.
-
If the TCP/IP protocol is not listed:
-
Click on Add, then Protocol, then Add again.
-
Select Microsoft, then TCP/IP.
-
Click on OK.
-
Click on the TCP/IP entry for your network adapter, then click on Properties.
-
On the Bindings tab:
-
For security purposes, unselect all entries.
-
When you get a Window telling you that you "have not selected anything
to bind to, do you want to select one now", click the No button.
-
If you have a DHCP server on your network:
-
On the IP Address tab:
-
Select Obtain an address automatically.
-
Click the OK button because you're done here.
-
If you don't have a DHCP server assigning IP addresses:
-
On the IP Address tab:
-
Select Specify an IP address.
-
For typical home networks, you can use an IP network number (the first
three fields) of 192.168.0. This network number needs to be the same on
all computers on the same network.
-
Use a unique number for the fourth field for each computer, from the range
1 to 254.
-
Use a mask for all computers of 255.255.255.0.
-
On the WINS tab:
-
Click Disable WINS resolution.
-
On the Gateway tab:
-
If you have one computer on your network that is going to be the gateway
to the Internet for all the computer on the network, put the IP address
of that computer in the New Gateway field, then click the Add button. If
you are using a network number of 192.168.0 as suggested above, the first
three fields here will also be 192.168.0.
-
On the DNS configuration tab:
-
Click Enable DNS.
-
The host name must be unique on your network. For a host name you could
put in the same as you used to identify your computer in the Identification
section above.
-
Do not fill in the domain, leave it blank.
-
In the DNS server search order field, if you are using a proxy server such
as WinGate as your connection to the Internet, enter the IP address of
the proxy server here and click the Add button. This will be the same address
as the gateway address above.
-
If you are using NAT for your Internet access, enter the address or addresses
of the DNS hosts on your ISP.
-
On the Advanced tab:
-
No need for changes here.
-
On the NetBIOS tab:
-
For security reasons, do not enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
-
Click the OK button.
-
Click on OK and allow Windows to restart the computer for it to
take effect.
-
When Windows restarts you will have to enter a username if no name is filled
in.
-
You do not need a password, just leave that part blank if you wish.
-
Click on OK.
-
If you have entered a new username, you will see another window asking
you to reenter your password. If you chose to have no password, just click
on the OK button again. If you chose to use a password, reenter it and
then click on OK.
-
Note that clicking on the Cancel button will cause you to not be
on the peer-to-peer network.
Confirm it worked by opening Network Neighborhood: you should see other
computers on the network. (Note: it may take two or more minutes for your
and other computers to show up in this list the first time. You may get
the error Unable to Browse the Network until then.)
-
If after a few minutes nothing shows up in Network Neigborhood, or if you
are troubleshooting the TCP/IP:
-
Confirm your network is working: Open a DOS window and type ping and the
IP address of the computer you are testing.
-
If TCP/IP is working you will get a series of Reply lines with other information
- ignore the other information.
-
If TCP/IP is not working you will get a series of Request timed out lines.
-
If you got replies for the computer's own address, try an address of one
of the other computers.
-
If that works you know the network cabling, hub or switch, and network
adapters are all working, and it's something specific in the NetBEUI or
peer-to-peer networking config that isn't working.
-
If you are using a DHCP server, you will need to find out what the IP address
is of both your computer and any other computer you want to ping is.
-
Click on Start, then Run, and type winipcfg then click OK.
-
Select your network adapter (it defaults to displaying your PPP, or dialup,
adapter).
-
You should see an IP address listed that is not all zero's.
-
If it is all zero's then you have not initialized your adapter with the
DHCP server. Click the Renew button.
-
If after a few seconds nothing has changed you are not communicating with
the DHCP server.

from the other computer but in some cases will ask for drivers or for you
to install the printer by running a setup program from the printer disk.
If this occurs on some printers it will default to the local LPT1 port
and you will have to manually change it to the network share after the
driver install program is finished.)
