1993-1996 - I worked for NorthwesTel in the Help
Desk division of the Information Systems Department.
Among other duties, I designed, implemented and supported the company's
internal-use WAN. I also
managed this division for the last 18 months. A job description is

Designed the Cisco-router based Wide Area Network.

Documented the network topology.

Allocated IP addressing and routing.

Maintained the company DNS listings.

Selected, ordered and configured routers.

Designed redundancy as required for critical paths.

Provided multiprotocol connectivity, including for Novell NetWare, DECnet
and LAT, and X.25.

Selected a firewall product for direct connection of the WAN to the Internet
and assisted in it's install. Maintained the security of the firewall ongoing.

Selected and implemented a dial-in method and authentication process for
remote access to the company WAN.

Wrote company security policy as related to electronic access to resources
on the company network.

Managed the Help Desk.

I directly supervised two telephone support positions and one part time
clerical support position.

Our department was responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all
computers for approximately 600 employees' work use.

I was responsible for the daily activities of approximately 8 technicians
in various communities, who maintained the computers and network.

In addition, whenever these technicians needed assistance in troubleshooting
a computer or a network problem they would come to me. My focus was both
to help them resolve the immediate problem and to teach them the technical
details so that they could be more independent in dealing with similar
problems in the future.

Provided documentation and information to all employees in the company
as changes were to occur in the network, as related to how they would use
it in their daily work.

Documented and modified work processes in order to add flexibility and
increase efficiency.
